Kaihoahoa Whenua | Landscape Architect
Pouwhiri Matua | Senior Principal
With over 15 years of experience, I bring a broad and versatile skill set that covers all stages of landscape architecture with a strong design focus, from strategic masterplanning through to detailed design and implementation management. My work spans a wide range of project types and scales, often involving complex urban, suburban, rural, and community environments. I lead multidisciplinary teams to deliver proven, thoughtful, creative, and successful outcomes.
I believe every phase of the design process plays a vital role in shaping cohesive and innovative landscapes, with collaboration at the core of my approach. I am passionate about fostering trust-based design processes that draw on the knowledge and perspectives of those around me, enriching both the journey and the outcome.
As a qualified horticulturalist and self-confessed dendrophile (tree enthusiast), I bring a deep respect for natural systems and a strong foundation in plant knowledge, which informs my design thinking and environmental sensitivity.
My portfolio reflects a balanced mix of public and private sector work, from open spaces, urban spaces, playgrounds, parks and reserves for local authorities, to retirement villages, resorts, complexes, schools, subdivisions, urban design and spatial planning for developers.
I have a particular affinity for places of meaning, memorials, sites of cultural significance, and spaces that invite deeper engagement. I’m drawn to design opportunities that challenge convention and push boundaries, creating outcomes that are distinctive and memorable while remaining grounded, practical, and appropriate to their context.
