A bespoke play space designed in collaboration with community, iwi and industry specialists to reflect the stories and spirit of Matamata.

Boffa Miskell has extensively collaborated to co-design a destination playgroud that offers exceptional play value and reflects the unique identity of the community.

The playground is located beneath a canopy of mature oak trees, and its design centres around a welcoming, natural, and inclusive community space. It features a wide variety of play experiences for all ages and abilities, from the very young and curious to older children seeking more challenging and adventurous play.

The design narrative draws inspiration from the land, the Maunga (mountains), the Awa (rivers), and the Ngahere (forests), and was developed through engagement with mana whenua. Boffa Miskell met with representatives from Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Hinerangi, with additional input provided on behalf of Ngāti Hauā. Their guidance helped shape a playground that is fun, functional, and meaningful.

A critical part of the design process was the collaborative approach taken with the playground working group. The group led community and school engagement. Boffa Miskell’s design team worked with the group, incorporating feedback to ensure the final design truly reflected local aspirations.

The working group's collective decision was to design a destination playground that exceeded the initial budget to ensure a high level of play value. The group has worked tirelessly to secure additional funding to bring that vision to life.

Currently in its final funding stages, the playground is scheduled for construction in 2025/2026.
