A new campus to accommodate increased student enrollment wit

Previously, the University shared facilities with Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology in the Bay of Plenty. Following a period of growth in University students studying in the Bay of Plenty, the University of Waikato sought to develop a purpose-built, University-led campus in the Tauranga City Centre, initially accommodating teaching facilities and amenities for 1000 equivalent full-time students (EFTS) with an ability for this number to increase to 1500. The Tauranga Campus opened in 2019.

The $60 million campus development was made possible through the support and drive of the region, especially key funders Tauranga City Council, Bay of Plenty Regional Council and the Tauranga Energy Consumer Trust (TECT), who all saw the need to enhance the range of qualifications and study options available to students in the Bay of Plenty.

Boffa Miskell provided planning services, including strategic advice in relation to site selection and consenting strategy. We worked collaboratively with a wide project team, including Ngai Tamarawaho who provided valuable input from a cultural perspective that was integral to the planning and design phase of the project.

Boffa Miskell provided guidance to the project team in terms of required deliverables for resource consent application purposes, including proposed plans and various technical reports to address the relevant statutory 'checks and balances' under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA).

The required resource consents for the project were granted on a non-notified by Tauranga City Council and Bay of Plenty Regional Council with fair and reasonable conditions, which enabled the construction phase to progress in an efficient and effective manner.
