Tracking progress on the nationwide goal to eradicate rats, mustelids, and possums from New Zealand by 2050.

The development of measures for tracking progress towards the Predator Free 2050 mission is a crucial component of the overall strategy. Predator control data (such as trapping and bait station data) is collected by many groups across Aotearoa New Zealand.

An emerging challenge is how to bring together these diverse data. Predator Free 2050 Ltd. are addressing this challenge by developing a national Data Strategy. Boffa Miskell worked with the PF2050 Data Collaborative Group to investigate the development of structures and standards to support a coordinated national approach towards measuring progress.

Currently, the majority of data collected by Predator Free groups are highly localised and used largely for internal purposes, such as reporting on progress within their own team and to boards or funders. A key challenge for advancing a nationwide strategy for data collection and sharing will be how to effectively aggregate local data to form a cohesive overview of the mission at the regional and national scales.

To do this, PF2050 needs to have a clear understanding of how people involved in predator management across the country are collecting and using data.

Boffa Miskell developed a questionnaire on data collection and use, which was distributed widely amongst predator free networks, as well as engaging directly with key stakeholders. There was a good level of engagement with our questionnaire by those working in predator control projects.

We analysed and synthesised the results of this outreach to produce Predator Free 2050 Data Strategy – Current Data Landscape. It is a 'snapshot' report on the current data landscape in the PF2050 system.

Understanding how different groups working within the PF2050 system collect, store, and use their data will inform development of a strategy to produce integrated data systems and ultimately, the ability to robustly measure progress towards predator freedom on a national scale.
