Improving safety and visitor experience for a popular visitor attraction.

Katiki Point, located at the southern tip of the Moeraki Peninsula, is a culturally and ecologically significant site known for its dramatic coastal views, the historic Te Raka a Hineatea Pā site, and frequent sightings of yellow-eyed penguins and fur seals. The site attracts many visitors, and its sensitive environment requires thoughtful design to manage access and protect its values.

Boffa Miskell assisted with the design of a new palisade fence and upgraded walking track to improve safety and visitor experience. The project was later delivered for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu, with Boffa Miskell working closely with iwi representatives and local contractors to implement the design.

The palisade fence was carefully aligned to avoid archaeological features and constructed to retain views while providing edge protection. A gravel path with timber edging was designed to be low-impact and durable, with integrated drainage to suit the coastal terrain. A whakaruruhau (gateway structure) was also incorporated to welcome visitors and guide respectful behaviour.

The project successfully enhanced the site’s cultural storytelling and conservation values, creating a safer and more meaningful experience for all who visit.
