Improving traffic flow and safety while celebrating the heritage of Pōneke Wellington.

The Aotea Quay roundabout forms part of the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme of transport improvements. It replaces a previously signalised intersection, allowing vehicles to access the ferry terminal directly from State Highway 1, rather than travelling along Hutt Road. This change improves traffic flow and safety, particularly for trucks and other vehicles arriving from the north, while reducing heavy traffic on Hutt Road and enhancing safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users along Hutt Road and Thorndon Quay.

Boffa Miskell provided landscape architecture services, working closely with mana whenua artists and representatives, local government, and design disciplines to develop a concept proportionate to the road environment.

The design draws on the site’s cultural and historical significance. Key cultural themes include historic pā sites along the coast, the three awa that once ran through the area (Whakahikuwai, Tiakiwai, and Pipitea), and the nearby Pipitea Marae. These themes are expressed through materials and layout that reflect both the natural and built environment.

Design elements include large river boulders representing the hearth, contrasted with salvaged broken brick bands from other Wellington City Council projects, arranged in a whāriki pattern. Ponga logs and red strands symbolise Pipitea Marae and manuhiri, while planting selections relate to the surrounding whenua and rohe.

As a road infrastructure project, traffic engineering and lighting design were integral to the process. Lighting placement and type were carefully considered to meet road safety requirements while enhancing the aesthetics of the traffic island and avoiding underground services. Collaboration with the wider project team was supported by 3D modelling of above- and below-ground features to ensure a coordinated and effective solution.

The roundabout successfully creates an experience of arrival into Pōneke Wellington from the north, and of departure when leaving the city.
