Kaihoahoa Whenua | Landscape Architect
Kaiwhiri | Associate Principal
Originating from New Orleans, I previously worked as a landscape architect in the USA, Australia, and am now based in New Zealand. While my job title is Landscape Architect, my speciality and interest lie in landscape planning, with a growing focus on adaptation planning, climate resilience, and nature-based solutions.
I have experience working on projects at differing scales with district and regional councils, iwi, individuals, and private developers that cover urban, rural, mountain and coastal landscapes. My role includes district / regional-scale landscape characterisation and evaluation assessments, natural character assessments, landscape effects assessments and the development of strategies to avoid, reduce, or manage potential adverse effects.
As a landscape planner, I contribute to strategic land use planning, landscape assessments, and policy development that support sustainable and resilient landscapes. I work collaboratively with stakeholders to integrate landscape values into planning processes, often using spatial analysis and nature-based approaches to address environmental challenges. The best part of my job is visiting the diverse, varied, and vast range of landscapes across Aotearoa, especially the more remote parts.
When I am not working, you can find me tramping or camping in the mountains (most likely Nelson/Kahurangi National Park), or relaxing in the Abel Tasman with my family.
