Matt Allott celebrates 20 Years
28 July 2025
Matt has led the planning for many key residential intensification and commercial projects in Tauranga and the Bay of Plenty

Planner Matt Allott is known for his facilitation skills and innovative approach to resource management. And, after twenty years in Boffa Miskell's Tauranga office, he has a comprehensive understanding of the legislative and political processes that influence how resources are managed, used and developed in the Bay of Plenty and nationally; and he is familiar with the common challenges faced by resource users and administrators alike.
Matt's practical planning and consultation advice ensures that project outcomes satisfy the client, the community, and environmental expectations. Over the past two decades Matt has played a role in the on-going evolution of Tauranga, even before the introduction of Plan Change 33.
He led the planning for the Latitude Apartments, an award-winning early residential intensification project on the fringe of Tauranga City Centre; and the Bask Apartments, a medium-density residential development in Mount Maunganui.
“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Matt for the past 18 years,” says landscape architect/urban designer Morné Hugo. “He consistently delivers strategic and practical planning solutions that help guide complex projects through to completion. He also provides trusted planning advice to both local and regional councils, earning the respect of clients and colleagues alike.”
“Matt has led the planning for a range of key residential intensification and commercial projects in Tauranga, including the Latitude Apartments and the University of Waikato campus,” says planner Sean Grace. “He has a wide network of industry and client contacts throughout the Bay of Plenty and Matt cares deeply about those clients and getting good results for them.”
Related to his work as a planner, Matt is an experienced expert witness, having presented evidence at the Environment Court and at local authority hearings in relation to resource consent and policy development matters.
"Matt has a wealth of knowledge of planning matters in the Bay of Plenty and surrounding areas," says Technical Lead for Planning, Chris Ferguson. "I'm very grateful for his support and mentorship of junior planners in that office, and his willingness to share his experience with the wider planning team."
Morné Hugo says, "Matt was incredibly supportive when I joined Boffa Miskell as a new import from South Africa, helping me settle into both the company and the New Zealand planning and design environment. He plays a valuable mentoring role to junior planners and brings a great sense of humour and energy to office social events, making him a much-appreciated presence in the team."
