Expanding our presence in the North Island
25 August 2021
We'll soon have a full complement of disciplines – planning, design and ecology – in Whangārei, to meet the needs of our clients.

The decision to expand Boffa Miskell’s presence in Northland comes after years of working on landscape, planning and ecology projects in the region; drawing on the expertise of consultants in Auckland, and other offices, as needed. But the rapid growth of the region informed the decision to establish a greater presence and full-time local consultants.
Dr Ian Boothroyd, ecologist and Associate Partner, will head the Whangārei office; and he is joined by biosecurity consultant Kane McElrea.
“Over the past year or so, it became increasingly clear that to achieve the best outcomes for our clients and meet the high standard that we set for ourselves as a company, we need to be in Whangārei full-time,” Ian says. “Kane and I will soon be joined by design and planning consultants.”
“Northland is thriving, and it makes sense for us to have a permanent presence,” says chief executive Kerry Gupwell. “We’ve had an increasing stream of project work in the region over the past few years, and we’re confident that’s going to continue.”
Boffa Miskell has been involved with ecology initiatives and biosecurity programmes in Northland, including long-standing involvement with Tara Iti Golf Course and Subdivision near Te Arai, and efforts to protect the critically-endangered Fairy Tern.
A number of infrastructure projects — including our role as Principal’s Environmental Advisor for Penlink; and Ara Tūhono – Warkworth to Wellsford for Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency — are also based close to Whangārei.
“Our presence in Whangārei is really a return, rather than something new,” says Kerry. “The company had an office there in the late ’90s and early 2000’s. We’ve maintained our relationships with various regional organisations and stakeholders, and we’re very much looking forward to growing our ties with ‘the winterless North’.”
The Whangārei office is centrally located in The Orchard, on Walton Street.
