Boffa Miskell celebrates the PCNZ Central Awards
14 November 2023
Rotorua projects and project teams were big winners at the 2023 Property Council New Zealand Central Property People Awards.

The Wai Ariki Spa and Hot Springs project team earned the Judges Choice Award, and the Boffa Miskell-sponsored Excellence in Sustainability Award went to the team behind the QE Health and Wellness Facility on the Rotorua lakefront.
The Boffa Miskell Excellence in Sustainability award recognises an individual or team who, through collaboration have championed sustainability initiatives, creating positive change within the industry or their organisation and inspired action within the wider property industry and/or community or achieved a positive environmental outcome.
QE Health and Wellness Facility is New Zealand’s only clinically integrated health and wellness facility and specialises in geothermal treatments and therapies.
Beginning as the Queen Elizabeth convalescence hospital in 1942, the facility was intended to be a temporary place help rehabilitate injured soldiers after WWII. Since then, the site has supported hundreds of thousands of patients, and grown significantly over time. Now called QE, the new $19M purpose-built health and wellness centre was opened in March.
Sustainable features include a predominantly timber engineered structure, locally sourced thermally modified timbers for interior and exterior, geothermal exchange water heating for pools and in slab heating, energy efficient lighting and low VOC materials.

Dave Moule, managing partner of the Hamilton Office, presented the award to the QE project team comprised of DCA Architects, Veros, Watts and Hughes, BGT Structures, Innerscape, Stratum, Dobbie Engineers, Beca, CMW Geosciences.
The Judges’ Choice Award went to the Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa Team. Selected by the judging committee, this award is presented to a nominee from the other categories, who deserves to be recognised for their outstanding contribution to the local property industry.
The Wai Ariki team includes Pukeroa Oruawhata Trust, Hawkins, Wayne Clarke Contracting, RCG Structural and Services, WSP, Veros, Dobbies Engineering, Stratum Consultants and Boffa Miskell.
Earlier this year, at the Designer’s Institute of New Zealand (DINZ) Best Awards, Wai Ariki Spa and Hot Springs took the Gold and the Supreme Purple Pin in the Spatial Design/Private Development Spaces category; and a Gold Pin in the Healthcare & Wellbeing category.
