Boffa Miskell at the 2022 New Zealand Coastal Society (NZCS)

The Conference programme included a range of speakers on topics that further understanding of Aotearoa New Zealand's sensitive marine environment.

The theme for this year’s conference was Small Islands, Big Ocean — Ko ngā moutere iti – Ko ngā moana nui; with coastal adaptation, managing and protecting our important coastal environment and community-led engagement being the main themes of the week.

Boffa Miskell sponsored Raewyn Peart, Policy Director of the Environmental Defence Society. Her inspiring keynote presentation was titled “Rethinking our Management Approach to Marine Life”.

Raewyn was a member of the Ministerially-appointed panel that led a comprehensive review of the resource management system in Aotearoa New Zealand and the Ministerial Advisory Committee tasked with progressing the recommendations in the Sea Change Tai Timu Tai Pari marine spatial plan for the Hauraki Gulf.

Additionally, on Day Two, marine ecologist Dr Tomasso Alestra’s presentation: Nature-based solutions for coastal hazards: a nationwide expert survey on current uptake, barriers, and opportunities reported on the results of a nationwide survey of professional (carried out by Boffa Miskell) to better understand the practicality of a more systematic use of these methods in Aotearoa New Zealand, and to outline challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
